One night I awoke from a dream about a dragon. It wasn’t frightening, but it wasn’t pleasant. The fire-breather definitely wasn’t Puff, the Magic Dragon. But what did it all mean?

All through history, dragons have symbolized power and depending on the culture, benevolent or bad. Dragons from Eastern cultures have historically been the manifestation of truth and virtue, prosperity, and spiritual or personal quest. Western culture, conversely, has depicted dragons as bringers of difficult times and destruction, guardians of treasure, and symbols of greed. So does the regional symbolism apply to dreams?

What about Biblical imagery? In Revelations 12, we are told of a dream in which the devil takes on the appearance of a red dragon. Does this then indicate that dragons are diabolical?

Not necessarily, but in most dream analysis traditions, the dragon is a symbol of a conflict, one which you must cope with. This type of dream is an anxiety dream, kind of like those you used to have where you dreamt of walking into the cafeteria and the whole school stopping to laugh at you. Perhaps you will even discover yourself fighting a dragon while a couple of of your other personal anxieties (like for me, being too late to take a test that is going to control what I do for the rest of my life) go on around you.

It is believed that if the dragon in your dreams has wings, it is symbolizing transcendence and insight. I've read that riding a dragon in your dreams is prophesy for some sort of spiritual alteration.

Possibly your dream dragon is standing in front of a cave, guarding its entrance. Various sources decipher that the cave is your subconscious and inside that cave is treasure, which in turn is your true self. And consequently if you fight your dream dragon, what you are really fighting is your own fear of discovering your inner self.Dragons in dreams are also associated with power, fire, and passion. Some people believe that these creatures are symbols of your sexual and emotional domains. However, it is also cautioned that these dreams are there to warn you to employ self control, which when not utilized, can lead to all types of harm.

Still an additional explanation comes from Freud and Jung, who, as you may have guessed, attribute dragon dreams to a person’s “devouring” characteristics of his or her mother or if you are male, your failure out of fear or misunderstanding to incorporate your feminine side into your personality.

So the next time you get up surprised from a dream about a dragon, don’t turn on all the lights and hide beneath the covers. Write down what you saw and then when you are more awake, really ponder about several of the problems and concerns underlying your everyday being. Now and again we much rather cope with the brutal evil critters than the genuine problems in our lives. That said, just remember that your dream is sending you a message and that is that you can do it-you can deal with and slay your dragon.
